What do ppl mean when they say you have to quarintine your fish
I'm planning on getting 6 neon tetras, 3 rasboras, 1 or 2 dwarf gourami, and 2 otto's, and I don't understand all this Quarintine talk. please help.
Answers:This is something not everybody does but they should! Here is the deal: you get a small tank. Ten gallons is good but five gallons could work for small fish. Then for at least two weeks you keep any new fish in this special tank to make sure they are not carrying any diseases. This way, if the new fish are sick they will not wipe out the rest of your main tank. People grumble about this but all you need is a bare tank, a sponge filter, a heater, and some sort of cover so the fish cannot jump out. Gravel and decorations are unnecessary though the fish would appreciate a place to hide. This setup does not cost much and then you have it when fish get sick and need to be moved to a separate tank for treatment. Here is a tip: Be sure to keep the sponge filter in the main tank (leave it hidden in the back somewhere) so it is colonized by the bacteria that break down waste and ready to go when you need it!
By the way, using a breeder net or container that puts fish in contact with your main system's water is no good for a new fish quarantine! If the new fish is sick the disease organisms will be in the main tank's water! Remember that fish can look healthy when you buy them but be incubating an organism that has not yet caused symptoms!
Put it by it's self
It means they have to be in a separate tank. To prevent diseases spreading.
They need to seperate them either in different tanks, or in the same tank with a divider. I had that problem a while ago. Are they sick, or it is a personality thing. The goal is to prevent further damage to your other fishes by seperating them out. They do the same for people when or if there is a contagious virus.
Quarantine means that you have to put the object, in this case, your fish, all by itself away from other objects, in this case, your other fish, to avoid passing diseases from one to the other. Or, they could be suggesting that you quarantine some fish to prevent them from eating the other ones.
You buy a seperate little sections for them, its like a plastic thing you put on the edge of your tank so that they are in the water but seperated in the plastic. Usually you do this with aggressive fish so they get used to eachother. You can also quarantine when they have a disease or think they might be infected with something, so other fish dont get sick.
It means they can't be together because one of them will eat other fish. I've had this happen before.
when we bought fish we used to leave them in the bag they came in, but hang it over the edge so the bag is in the water but not using the same water just the warmth, its just so that you dont give your fish any infections from the new ones as you could lose all your fish, as alot of fish if they have disease ussually show signs within 24 hours of you buying them
When ppl say that they mean do you have separate tank that they use just for sick fish it is their hospital.
It's usually a 2nd tank set up to make sure the new fish aren't sick and spread diseases to your fish. Usually keep them in there about a week before adding to your regular tank. Don't use one that's in the same tank, that's defeating the purpose, the water is usually still filtering through.
