What fish can cohabitate with a betta2007-11-24 23:11:53

i have a male betta fish ... atleast i think he is male. is there any other fish that it can get along with? it would be in a 2-2.5 gallon tank. i know that betta's are territorial so i guess what i want to know is, has anyone ever tried it.

Answers:

That tank is too small for another fish. Betta's tend to get along with other peaceful fish. As long as they aren't fin nippers. Also only place them with other tropical fish.

Edit* I house my male Betta in a community tank with platies, swordtails, neon tetras, black skirt tetras, Bleeding heart tetras, corydora's as well as a algae eater. They are all in a 36 gallon tank.

I also have 5 four month old males housed in a 20 gallon tank with Neon Tetra's and they do well.

Never house Males with females. Only when breeding them.

regular gold fish do well with them
NO goldfish. Goldfish grow two feet long.

Ghost shrimp work but you can't really keep any other fish in a tank that small.

fish with short tails, they cannot, will not tolerate ANY fish with long tails.other than that practically any other FEMALE fish
bettas will do great with most community fish in a larger tank. i have a 20 gallon with a betta and gouramis and rasboras. a 2 1/2 gallon tank is the the perfect size for 1 betta. if you want to add something else i suggest a live plant. java fern and java moss and small anubias will do great in the low light in a 2 1/2 gallon tank. they also sell anubias bulbs at walmart but most you will have to weed them out because a lot of them get too big for a 2 1/2 gallon tank.
i had a beta and nothing would live very long in the same tank not even a big goldfish fish are territorial yes but they also pick on the "weakest will" of the tank the fish could be twice his size and he will keep picking at it till it gets sick and dies my only advice is get a very very large fish thats not aggresive or a piccasimous (algae eater) but get a big one not a baby. Good luck theyre not called "fighting fish" for no reason. PS Id get a bigger tank too
Mine are in a ten gallon tank with 2 tetras, a molly a snail and 4 females now. THe molly is the bad one. I have had fin nipping when I put a male in there when it was a female. Everything was fine till one wanted to breed.
