What fish for a 3gal tank2007-11-24 23:11:55

I am buying a 3 gallon fish tank, and I dont know what fish to get. I know that 1 betta fish would fit.. but what other fish would be okay in there?

Answers:

You could get a small snail.

At most, a pair of betta (fyi... a pair is the term one uses for 1 male and 1 female). That tank is far too small for anything more. A goldfish is, by far, the worst fish to put in such a small tank. Goldfish need at least a minimum of 10 gallons of water per 1 fish.
you could get some goldfish!
More than one fish in a 3 gal. tank is not a good idea. A goldfish would also be ok. If you want something different, you probably shouldn't get any other fish bigger than a goldfish or a beta, but first make sure that they'll be alright on their own. (Some fish prefer to live in groups.) I suggest you go to a pet shop and ask an employee which fish would be alright on their own in a 3 gal. tank.
Wow, that is small. I soppose some guppies, maybe not even a betta fish! I strongly suggest small guppies. Small guppies are not really that ugly, just depends on which type. There are the regular white ish cream colored guppies, but there are also "Fancy Guppies." They have flowing tails and pretty colors like blue or red.

Well, good luck!

And no, goldfish are not a good idea. We have 2 in a 10 gallon tank, and they are almost like too big for it! They are 2-3 inches, and they would be wayyyyy to big for a 3 gallon tank!

Hi, A Betta is your best bet for such a small tank, but you could put a trio of guppies or a trio of tetras. A small goldfish will work in one for awhile, but it will outgrow the tank pretty quickly. Good luck; Patricia
OMG! don't put two bettas in together- unless they're male and female! the two males will fight to the death! Bettas are also known as Siamese fighting fish- I hope you're not some sicko and I'll regret telling you about them. maybe one other fish approx the same size as the betta, because he will eat anything smaller than him- but bettas are pretty solitary by nature. If you want some other kind of fish in there and some movement, try 4-6 guppies or tetras, but don't mix them with bettas.
For such a small tank I would suggest ONE betta (two even if they are male and female will fight, most likely the male killing the female, when they are not ready to breed) possibly just a few small guppies or neon tetras, or other small fish (you would need a heater though to keep those guys warm enough since they are tropical). You could have a small goldfish for awhile, but goldfish require a lot of filtration (either a filter or very very frequent water changes) to be happy and it will quickly outgrow a 3 gallon tank.
you could get a guppy(s) or gold fish i have had 2 goldfishes in a 2 gal tank and I've have them for 10 months=)
Don't listen to the morons suggesting a goldfish -- that is just stupid, they will die and need constant cleaning. Goldfish are HUGE when they grow up, and a three gallon is barely appropriate for one betta -- obviously you can only keep very small fish in there, and fish that don't like to swim a lot.
you can put a betta with shrimp in there

that's about it

with a live plant

but don't forget to let the tank cycle before you ad your fish

Hope that helps

Good luck
