What is a Baby Cortez Stingray
I was in the fishstore yesterday and I noticed they had a "baby cortez stingray" for sale. Of course the guy working had no useful knowledge on the ray. He just said they need a certain kind of tank (he didn't know what kind) and they are not hearty eaters. I tried researching a little more online, but havent really gotten anywhere. I did see that they may also be called a Pacific Dwarf Stingray. Can anyone help me? I want to know what does it need (what size tank, etc), what does it eat, is it safe to be around other fish? Anything useful would be greatly appreciated!

Dave "Baby" Cortez was a musician back in the late 50's and early 60's. He played keyboards and was a backup musician on many hits of the time.
Pacific dwarf stingrays are saltwater fish and need VERY special care. I believe you should have at least a 75 to 125 gallon tank for one of them. It would be quite expensive to start a saltwater setup for one of them. Probably around $500-750.
This species is Urobatis maculatus, also known as a spotted round ray. I do not recommend keeping this species in a home aquarium. They reach a maximum size of 42 cm, which would require a tank around 500 gallons to keep comfortable as an adult. If you do choose to attempt to keep this species, I would recommend the following:
Have a sand bottom to allow the ray to bury itself for shelter.
Do not keep it with any butterflies, damsels, or pygmy angelfish. Those fish will pick at the soft flesh of the stingray and injure it repeatedly.
Be prepared to feed unique food items like clams, mussels, live and frozen shrimp.
Note, this species is also considered VENOMOUS, which makes handling a challenge.
Hope this helps
