What is a good alternative to an aquarium stand2007-11-24 23:40:56

I dont have much especialy $150 to spend. Also it's a 55 gallon tank.

Hey :) If I were you I would FIRST go thrift store shopping. You never know what you could find there! Or even check the newspaper classified ads for sale items even garage sale listings.

What ever you decide make sure it is sturdy. 55 gallons of water weighs quite a bit

I'd go with a nice dresser as well. You can paint it whatever color suits and there is lots of storage. Make sure it is a real wooden dresser and not that particle board crap. As soon as that gets a bit wet it turns to sawdust and with the weight of a 55 gal I don't think it would hold up for too long. You could find a good one at a thrift shop or a used furniture store fairly cheap.

Your best bet is reinforced steel of some sort. A 55 gallon tank weighs, roughly, 440 lbs. Wood, unless it's designed right, will bow under that weight.

Try looking at www.craigslist.com for aquarium stands in the size you need. Also, check your local Goodwill, ARC, and Salvation Army---aquarium stands sometimes pop up there and are usually -very- cheap (compare to buying them new).
