What is a good fish for this task
I have some guppies (2 female, 1 male) in a 10 gallon. After christmas, I will be getting a 55 gallon to put male offspring in. The females will stay in the 10 gallon and possilby one other 10 gallon i have laying around. What I need is a single fish that won't hurt my adult guppies but will help control the fry population until I get the 55 gallon set up. what are some good fish to eat fry that will go well in a 10 gallon setup?
Answers:A female betta might be a good choice. They are usually more mellow than males and if they know there are little things to hunt they will usually focus on that task. You might watch how they interact with your male guppies though. Dwarf Gouramis might be a good choice too. The Croaking variety stay plenty small, but would likely hunt fry. Their colors are also nice, but shouldn't take away from your guppies.
A neon "Australian" rainbowfish (many common names) would work too. It is a schooling community fish that is fast enough to make short work of baby guppies. They tend to get along with most fish, and they are always on the move.
If you want a good number to survive, you could double up and get a dwarf clawed frog or two. They are not as efficient in eating babies, but they sure try their best :o) A female sword tail might be a good choice too, they will eat what they can catch but are not 100% effective.
A glass cat, also known as ghost cat is pretty effective as long as there is enough open water for them to catch the fry in. Too much cover can be a bit much for these guys to deal with. There are a lot of options available, but I can't really offer too many without knowing what your water conditions (PH, Temp) are. Good Luck!
goldfish, they eat the fry, and they get along with adult guppies.
ghoast/glass shrimp will eat fry but wont harm your aduld guppies(i have both)
zebra fish will eat anything thats small enough to eat, but wont hurt adult guppies.
Goldfish have too much ammonia as they have no stomachs and their waste will pollute your water and kill all the guppies. Never mix Goldfish with livebearers.
Ghost shrimp, are a good idea but can only eat so much, as they are themselves tiny and usually are just a waste of money because they often time just die, plus they are omnivores.(hummm)
You could add a few Patties and other live bearers. Males only, so you won't get even more babies. I鈥檓 sorry you have to even get rid of any of them, oh and one more thing鈥?checks the local pet stores鈥?many of them will buy your extras for you, especially the privately owned ones.
Congrats on the up coming upgrade, isn't this a wonderful addiction
