What is the best way to clean white sand in a fish tank2007-11-24 23:41:03

it is 55 gallons with about 2 bags of white sand and only 2 fish. the sand is turning black. It has been syphoned once and the filters have been changed. twice.

Answers:

Put the fish in a small bowl with clean water, get rid of the water in the tank, put the sand in a strainer with very small holes, wash it with water and sea salt, put it back again, fill the tank to the end with clean water with appropriate temperature for ur fish.

try to remove the fish into a smaller tank or into a bath tub. Then DONT remove the water but just the sand as much as possible soak the sand in warm water for about an hour or two and try and agitate it as much as possible to remove the black stuff. If you cant do this keep on syphening but not too much maybe one every two days but stop immediately after you see improvement or until it is all gone.

you probably have an organism that is living on your sand. If its a fresh water tank remove the majority of your substrate and place it in a pillow case, take it outside and run up the old water bill by spraying the devil out of the pillow case. Rotate and 'kneed' the tied case occationally. Really, I have had a hard time convincing myself not to just replace the sand in fresh water every other cleaning or so.

buy some cat fish or something similar, or get rid of the sand and go 4 gravel, it may look nice but do you really want the trouble of cleaning it
