What is the best way to transport a saltwater tank without having to redo the water
i am buying a new 55 gallon saltwater tank, and it is already established with two clown fish. i am a beginner and will be setting up the tank myself. the tank will be on the road for about an hour and a half.
Answers:Get yourself some of those rubbermaid bins from the store. Moved several times(fresh water tanks) in those, longest was just over 12 hours. A battery operated air pump would probably be a good investment as well(good to have for power outages also), you can get those cheap at this place:

I don't know if you'll be able to transport all of the water, suppose you could by buying a few bins, but I'd have some salt water mixed up at home waiting. Be sure to keep any filter media, or live sand, live rock wet in a separate bin as well. Keep the fish in a separate bin with no decorations so they don't roll on the fish and squish them. Good luck!
your gonna need to go get buckets with water tight lids like the orange ones from home depot fill once bucket with all the sand then some others with the live rock and water to keep the rock moist. then you can bag the fish as though you were bringing them home from a store. you wont need all the water but you should fill up some water tonight that will allow you to top off the tank with whatever water you throw away. If you have any decholinator that would be great so you know the water was treated. you may also want to get a small holding tank so when you get everything home you can use some of the water from the tank that you are getting just to hold the fish while you set everything up. You will need to add salt to the water you prepare tonight befor filling the rest of the tank. other than that you should be ok.
I transfered my 20 gal into a 35 and I was scared to death that everything would die. I bagged up my fish and everything else. Put the old water into some 5 gal jugs then set the new tank up. I let the new tank cycle till the water got clear and the temperature get consistent then I floated the fish for a while before putting it in. Happy to say nothing died. Just a few weeks ago I did another transfer from my 35 hex to a 40 rec tank. Just make sure you let the tank stabilize before you put in your clowns. Float them for at least 20-30 mins getting the temp the same.
Been here done this too many times. There are a number of ways to move a tank, but no matter what you will have to make some new water.
