What is the growth rate of the goldfish2007-11-24 23:41:45Answers:

Like the first person said it has a lot to do with its environment. Goldfish grow the most the first year of its life so don't expect it to continue growing so fast the older it gets. Always make sure to feed it good food and different foods, like fresh veggies. And water changes are a must if kept in a tank, not only are they messy and need it so the nitrate doesn't rise too high but they release a hormone that actually stunts their growth if not taken out of the water.

it depends completely on its environment

I raise goldfish, the breeders are in 1000 ponds, the babies are in 500 gal ponds, babies from this year (6 mo old) are already

1 1/2" to 2", I have babies from '05 that are 3" to 4"

I know people who raise them in natural ponds (several acres each) and their fish will be 4 to 6" in the first year, so the larger

the pond (or lake) the faster the growth

I know people who kept their fish in a bowl and they only got to be about 3" long in over 5 yrs

They grow to the volume of water they are in, the better quality they food and amount they get will make a difference on how quickly they grow.
Dear Richard,

Both people that have answered so far have gotten part of the answer right. The rate of the goldfish will grow is depending on the type of foods as well as environment. I find to keep gold fish happy and healthy is to feed a gold fish food, and a spurlina food ( i find depending on the size of the goldfish that Omega Ones Super veggie Kelp Pellets or Flakes work very well for they truly have a lot of spurulina and kelp in them) Gold fish should eat more vegetation then tropical fish and sometimes as they get older have trouble digesting foods with higher meat proteins tropical fish food and sometimes Labeled goldfish foods.in them.

Water quality is a big one, and the reason for a fish to grow better in a larger tank or pond then a bowl is actually due to water quality more then size of habitat. The higher the ammonia and worse the water chemistry the slower fish will grow.. Hence in a bowl it is harder to keep ammonia down, and the larger the environment the easier.. Since their are many factors to consider it is hard to tell you exactly what the growth rate would be.

Hope this answers your question.
