What is the life expectancy of a gold fish2007-11-24 23:41:47

Have a goldfish for 3 years. Lately he is looking a little sluggish, and my 4 year old who thinks he actually is "Nemo" will be devastated if one morning we wake to a floating fish. Anyone know how long goldfish usually last?

well for the most part , goldfishlive a pretty long time , 10 years plus, although most dont make it that long due to poor water conditions. most of the time fish start to look kinda shabby and less active when water quality is bad. try giving it a water change and see if that helps. if not look for tell tale signs such as white blotches or a whitish film about the fish, also look for reddness in gills or heavy breathing. some of these can be fatal but its easily fixed. one thing you could try is to put some aquarium salt, it is a natural deterrant for most ailments. other wise they do sometimes have simple disfunctions such as constipation and/or upset stomach. hope you have goodlcuk and your fish does fine.

That is REALLY long for a fish. Do his scales look white, like they're coming off? If so, he may have the fish disease Ick. You might try getting IckOut, or you might invest in a fish that looks the same and make a switch while your son is sleeping, just to keep him from being devastated.

once my fish lasted 5 years and i was lucky yours probably wont live much longer. maybe get another fish and replace it lol. hope to help good luck bye

Chances are, you gold fish wont be living much longer. The longest I've had a goldfish live (without something killing it) was a year and a half. The fact that your fish has lived three years is amazing.

yeah. they last about 3 years. i suggest u get a replacement goldfish and hide him in the closet just incase "nemo" goes belly up.

The good news for you.. I have a 9-year-old goldfish. (that means I've owned it for 9 years, who knows how long it's actually been alive)
