The bad news for you.. that means a goldfish can live at least 9 years.

I bought 9 of them for 10 cents apiece way back when and now I'm down to one. There were two until a few weeks ago, I came home from vacation to one (hmmmmm)

This last-of-the-nine is leaving tomorrow to go live in a junior high school library's aquarium. If things go wrong with your fishie, you can tell your kiddo that Nemo went to junior high, too.

Two to three years is about as long as you can expect a gold fish to live. Tell your 4-year-old that you can get another "Nemo" that needs a home. But be realistic and tell him about the goldfish's life span.

Most goldfish die well before their time sadly. Remember, they're bred from carp who are very long lived themselves.

Like other answerers, the most I've had goldfish live is three years. It mostly depends on their environment and I've found they live longer with better filters (the kind that sit on the back of the aquarium and suck the water up).
