There is a 'hat' called a 'ten gallon hat' because of its large size, but it certainly holds nowhere near ten gallons!

In the old west cowboys use to wear these hats on cattle drives.

Sometimes between water holes they would fill their hats to water their horses, the hat could actually hold about a gallon of water, the cowboys just expanded on that!
