What is the minimum sized tank that would be able to house a Silver Arowana2007-11-24 23:12:03

This tank will be kept in a living room.

Answers:

Gallons per inch of fish = used toilet paper, sorry.

Silver Arowana, assuming you mean the South American ones, keep this in mind. Adult size in the wild, they can reach up to 48 inches. In all likelyhood in a tank, you won't see them reach that size, probably closer to 36-40 inches.

You need turning space with this fish really. The IDEAL set up would give you room for the fish to turn with no trouble, meaning the length of the fish + 1/2 of that. That is IDEAL, that doesn't mean necessary. I have three Silver South Americans in a 180 and I consider a 180 to be a bare minimum needed for South Americans. This is my opinon and you will find MANY other sites out there advocating probably a 210 or higher.

I've had like 10 + Silver South Americans and consider myself well experienced with this fish is why I am using a 180. If you want to be safe and this is your first time keeping one, then I'd reccomend you get a 225 or 250 set up. Probably an 8 foot tank with at least 24 inches turning space in width but if you can get 30 to 36 width, that is a huge plus for you.

Yeah it's true that you'd be good with a bigger tank, but again as said, it's not necessary and like the old saying about opinions, everyones got one and everyone also has rear ends too, some smell worse then others lol. I'm not even going to go pull any number of my BA's on Arowana to prove myself simply because I don't have to. I can tell you what I know from experience. Will someone have different experiences? Sure, does that make them right or wrong? Absolutly not. It's kinda like that thing about smoking and cancer when you think about it. How do you explain a person that smokes all thier life, never has a single problem? How do you explain a person that smokes one month and gets lung cancer? Do either of those support a theory? Not really no. I don't have to have sold a fish or spout links to support my knowledge, I can tell you what works and if others happen to agree with me, that doesn't make me better or worse then someone else. It's just a matter of who you the asker wants to trust. I haven't had a single arowana die on my from "stunting" or cramped conditions yet. But hey like I said, if you want to listen to someone else, it's all good. Mine certainly are not going to die from someone else saying my tank is too small simply because I know better lmao. Best of luck to ya and cheers. I'd also wish you luck taking advice from ill reputed claims of "13 inch" parrot fish which if this is true I own the Brooklyn bridge.you be the judge on that one.

As a minimum, you want 10 gallons per inch of fish. So go by how long the fish should be at maturity.
Figure on 180 gallons as a reasonable minimum for a good long term home for one.
at least 300 gallons,
