What is the minimum tank size for a communtity of three female bettas2007-11-24 23:41:49

I have a community of three female bettas who have lived in relative harmony for almost a year but now I have to move to a place where I will have much less room. I'm going to have to downsize if I want to keep them. What is the absolute minimum tank size I can put them in and still keep my girls happy?

Answers:

It really depends on their temperament. Normally I'd say at least 15 gallons, but if they've existed for years 5 gallon might do it. You may have to break down and jar them.

3 gal.
29 gallons. They are still territorial even though they are less aggressive than the males.
from experience 20 gallons is it
Okay, well they DO NOT need a 29 gallon tank, nor a 20 gallon, for only three female bettas!! Way too much space. They are small fish, used to small bodies of water, and do well in smaller tanks. I currently have five female bettas in a 2-3 gallon tank right now. They are doing awesome, and enjoy each others company. They will though nip at each other, but that is just their nature. Also make sure you put a small plant on the bottom. (gives them a sense of security) and preferably one that has cloth for "leaves" so they dont rip their fins as they swim near it.
3 gallon
I agree, 3 gallons should be plenty, no more than 5.
