What is wrong with my fish"2007-11-24 23:41:55

my betta is white and looks really fat but it doesnt ever eat food. and it stays on the bottom of my tank all the time it barely moves,,sometimes it floats left, sometimes right, sometimes it goes down,. and liek its scary it hardly moves and i alsways feed it. and it is white form the fins which it was never white it was always red.WHATS WRONG HELP ASAP!!

Number one killer of fish is food - namely overfeeding. Excess food rots in the tank and creates all sorts of problems, high nitrites and ammonia which burn the skin and damage gills, and sometimes acidify the water. All of these things, added to the high bacteria found because of the rotting food, add up to many types of bacterial and fungal infections and toxicity to the poor fish.

Small frequent water changes may help, cut down on food if that is the issue, small amounts of aquarium salt as part of the water change may help reduce some of the bacteria levels, small filter or airstone if the tank is big enough can help (bettas aren't particularly strong swimmers so a big airstone in a bowl will have him swirling around like a tornado).

Bettas don't live all that lon as a rule -maybe two years and if he was older when you bought him he may just be nearing his natural end as well.

If he already has a bacterial or fungal infection -patchy white or cottony growths etc- then you'll probably need medicine to try to save him. As a very loose rule of thumb I only give the fish, food about the size of his eye, 2-3 times a day max (I like very small feedings 2-3 times a day but less active or cold water fish may be less, very active fish might eat very slightly more).

Go to petsmart and get some algea remover. If you dont, it will die. They only live two years anyhow but if the fins are turning white..it wont live long

your fish is suffering from bad water. I had a fish do the same thing and there was to much chlorine in the water. Go to the pet store and they can tell you what u need for it.

sounds like it could be a number of things. if the fins were red and started tuning white that could be a bad sign as thats usually indicative of a fish disease called 'ick' but it can usually be cured with some medication you find in a pet store. if its with other fish you probably want to quarantine it and keep a close eye on any other fish it was with while you medicate it. hopefully it isnt too far along or it might not be saveable. then again on another note- ive had bettas alot they dont tend to move around too much when they arent feeling good or just want to rest. some are just lazy. but my bet would be that its just not feeling good
