What its the Brown algae like substance on the inside of my fish tank and what can I do to prevent i2007-11-24 23:41:57

Its a brown like film that attaches to plants and glass of my freshwater 29 gallon tank . there are 15 fish inside the tank. Oh and it is a Community Fish Tank. The water is clear and the Amonia (sp) appears to be in the normal range.

on my tank the algae is caused by the 'waste " from the fish you should clean your filter at least once a week the whole thing and change the carbon filter at least once a month or buy a sucker fish they love the algae they also sell algae remover at most places where they sell fish try that and see if this helps or try this link below it helped me out

If the ammonia isn't zero then its not safe. The brown algae can be caused by too much waste from either over feeding or an overstocked tank.

Buy some plecos for your tank, they are algae eaters.

Chinese algae eaters and other catfishes can also do the job.

If the algae is on the glass walls clean it with a magnetic cleaner.

Usually algae is from old food that has not been eaten and fish waste. Get yourself a decent filter and try get some tank cleaning fish like an algae eater, placostamus (sorry bout the spelling), and plant cleaners. I have at least one of each and my tank is sparkling clean. They are all very calm fish and are not too bothered by others. Their favourite thing is too eat algae so you can be sure your tank will be sparklingclean in no time! And don't forget to do a monthly water change by taking out a quarter of the water in your tank and replacing it with fresh water. Good luck!

It is indeed brown algae. Usually this type of algae will just wipe off the tank. Their are several factors that can cause any kind of algae like, Over feeding, hi nitrates, light being on for over 10 hours (approx), Being in direct sunlight, and needing a different bulb ( this is for brown algae only. Bulbs that come with hoods usually are just a generic aquarium bulb they do this not knowing what the individual will want to keep in their tank.) Fish that can clean it up are Clown plecos, Ottocinclis cats (otto), busy nose plecos. The fish listed above should do the best job on cleaning it. Not all algae eaters will eat all types of algae.
