What kind of cichlid did I get2007-11-24 23:42:17

I recently was given a tank that came with a cichlid. I already have a Jack Dempsey, and since they are the same size, I put them in together. So far, so good. The fish that came with the tank is about the same shape as the Jack Dempsey, body, fins, etc. The new one is a pinkish tan with vertical black stripes, and a black dot at the base of the tail. All the fins are lined with a pretty orange-pink. The eyes are lighter and kind of protruding, compared with the Jack dempsey, which has flat, dark eyes. The new one's mouth seems more pointed than that of the Jack, also. Can anyone tell me what I have?

If your new fish is indeed a flower horn as ronald says, it will eventually kill your Jack. Flower horns are one of the meanest most agressive cichlids out there. The only cichlid meaner, that I know of, is the dovii. They both get huge and are totally intolerant of other fish in their areas.

Piranhas are meaner, but they are tetras. yes, tetras.

Check in with "cichlidforum.com" they will identify it for you if you post a picture. You must join the forum, but it costs nothing and is one of the best forums on cichlids that I know of.

You will learn a lot by just reading through the various threads pertaining to your fish.

From your description, your cichlid could be one of several cichild species or even a hybrid. At first, I thought of a Convict, but the pointy head sounds like Firemouth. Can you add any other descriptive facts? Are you even sure it's a cichlid originating from the Americas?
