What kind of fish can you put in a 5-gallon aquarium
Another idea would be 3 - 4 male guppies. In any case, you don't have too many choices since the tank is so small. You have to stick to fish that don't grow more than an inch in size. Bettas get larger than that but you can only have one male betta in the tank anyway and can't keep a female in with him..so that limits you to one fish. You might get away with one male betta and a few neons but the betta may eat the neons since they are small enough to fit in his mouth. I have seen a betta with neons, but that was in a larger tank where they had much more room.
In any case, even though you are quite limited in what you can do with a 5 gallon, you can really make it look good with some live plants (providing you have lights). Something simple like Moneywort (taller background plant) and some cryptocerna (low foreground plant). Those plants can tolerate lower lighting level of a standard bulb. Some colorful gravel and a few of the small fish I mentioned.that little tank could look pretty neat.

A small school of 5-7 zebra danios or white cloud mountain minnows. They stay small and you will be able to enjoy schooling behavior. Both are easy care fish.
The general rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon. But when you buy fish, don't forget that they are probably going to grow so I would go with 3 or 4 little tetras. If tetras don't appeal to you, you could try a beta with some african dwarf frogs or a snail or two. I would stay away from gold fish unless you intend on changing a portion of the water about every other day. Hope that helps. Also, don't forget that no matter what kind of fish you add, it's important to set your tank up at least 1 or 2 days before you add any fish and let the filter and heater (if you have one) run through. It is also important to maintain a normal maintainence schedule for your tank. Even though it's a small tank you need to change about 1/3 of the water every week. Hope that helps you and good luck!
