Because anything less then 1 gallon will collect ammonia reall fast and you'll have to change water every other day which will stress out your fish and ammonia and nitrate WILL kill your betta, so with one gallon its like change 100% water 1 time a week, 2.5 gallon once a week, and for 5 gallon 50% water once a week.

if water is bad, fish WILL get sick, and betta gets sick pretty easily because of their long fins

For beginers guppies are the best,because they live even in harsh environments.If you are looking to keep as individual fighter in a spherical bowl will do good,they are beautiful and they are not much sensitive to rough handling where gold fishes fail.

I would get a betta fish. I dont know a lot about them but i used to have one and they make great fish pets!

i would get a beta fish because there Tank dosent have too be verry big But the olny thing that sux is they olny live for about 2 years..

I would recommand goldfish. They are hardy but u have to do water change at least once a week to keep the water clean.

Get a 5 gallon tank, a small filter and a male paradise fish and a few minnows - Paradise fish are great - they can live in cold water, easy to keep. They dont produce much waste like goldfish - they change colours all the time and have way more of a personality than betta's (or siamese fighting fish). They are also very hardy so there is less chance you will kill it being a beginner.

I used to have paradise fish in a coldwater aquarium. I have since had all sorts of fish but have always looked back fondly on this species. I now keep pufferfish, these are quite complicated to look after but again like the paradise fish they seem to have personality - I think that is what is essential in pet keeping. no point having something that just sits there and ignores you.
