ask your local pet stores for something that does not get sick easily and will not eat/fight with other fishes (if you are planning to have more than one fish per tank). Visit a variety of pet stores so you can get the best advice and prices. If possible bring along an adult as they can help you to negociate for a better price on the fishies and equipments.

Betas in the wild, due to the natural cycles there, live only one year -- two at the most. This is the case with many small fishes and is why people often do not have much success with their aquariums. Nature is against you. However, even in small bowls well cared for Betas may live 3-5 years! The trick is to maintain the water temperatures very evenly and to not introduce any contaminates, change the water frequently and carefully, and not overfeed.

Betas are easy and don't require much maintenance. I think this is a good fish for a 12 year old.You could keep it in a little bowl of some sort without having to go out and by a tank and filter and all that other stuff.

Betas die easily, are dirty, and mean. They are gross!
