What tank mate would be best for my Siamese fighting fish in a small tank2007-11-24 23:42:29

tropicals. Siamese fighting fish are usually kept in small bowls, vases, or small tanks with out a filtration system because they don't need it. When you start to introduce other fish you need plenty of air, heat, and filtration. I have a 46 gallon tank with all different kinds of fish including a fighting fish and everyone gets along. There is plenty of cover for hiding for the needs of the different species.

A pair of platys or similar fish will do fine as long as there is the proper temperature and heat.

Depending how small is "small" you could add some peaceful community fish. If you have a 10 gallon and it's fully cycled you could try a few otos or corys or small group of tetras. A cycled 5 gallon could sustain your betta and some ghost shrimp or maybe an apple snail.

Asm long as the tank is heated and filtered, a small peaceful species like white cloud minnows (don't need heater actually) or zebra danios would be fine, but they need to be in groups. A small bottom feeder is another option, such as a dwarf african frog or ghost shrimp

I put a goldfish my son won at the fair in with out betta figuring the goldfish wouldn't live very long. it has been a year and a half now, and the two are very happy together. they play chase and if the betta is not awake in the am for feeding, the goldfish nudges him out of the treasure chest he sleeps in. maybe i should give them both names now.

A male betta is best off left by himself. I've tried mixing them, and it just doesn't work out. He's constantly attacking the other fish. Even if you put a female betta in, one will kill the other.

Females are generally more sociable.
