What to do about algae under the silicone in the corners of the fish tank2007-11-24 23:42:31

We have spots of algae(sp?) running along the inside of the silicone. How do you get rid of it? or do we need to worry? A 55 gallon tank with a variety of fish (including algae eaters).

Answers:

Unfortunately theres nothing you can do. Other than purchase a new tank. Its nothing to worry about because it wont effect the tank or anything like that. Just an eyesore.

If you cant get it off with rubbing your finger over it or by using a algae sponge I wouldn't worry about it. Algae is actually a form of food for many fish. As you indirectly mentioned by saying you had algae eaters. Having a algae free tank is actually for our enjoyment the fish themselves could care less.

One thing you may want to do is increase your frequency of partial water changes. Algae needs certian conditions in order to grow. One of these deals with the by-products of the food you feed your fish and their waste. By increasing the frequency of the water changes you are pulling more of these by-products out of the water making it harder for the algae to gain a foothold in the tank.
