Goldfish are not good beginners' fish, due to the large amount of waste they produce and the large size they attain (they grow to about one foot in length). People keep them in small bowls and insist that their fish is fine, even after the fish died at the age of five years old due to improper care. The lifespan for goldfish is about twenty to thirty years, so a goldfish that dies at the age of five is still just a baby. Goldfish NEED a large, filtered tank or pond for long-term survival, and do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

That said, as a previous poster mentioned, white clouds and danios would be great for a small, unheated tank. They do need a filter on the tank, however, so if you do not have one you will need to get one. Certain types of tetras can also be kept in unheated tanks. If the tank is 25 gallons or larger, you can keep Buenos Aires or Blind Cave Tetras (both of which are native to more temperate climates). If your tank is unheated and unfiltered, and holds at least two gallons of water, your posibilities are limited mainly to just bettas or Paradise Fish. Paradise Fish are great alternatives to bettas, if you want something less common.

I have 1 NEON and 1 SUCKERMOUTH CATFISH that continue to thrive in my 4L tank that ranges from 69 F to 78F over the past 8 months. When my tank is cold I turn on the light till it warms the water to 76F then I turn it off. I use a flourescent compact bulb to gently warm things up. My fish are always hungry.

the inch per gallon rule is crap. They tell you that at petsmart so you buy more fish than you should have.

If you don't have a a heater stick with bettas, danios, minnows, maybe guppies. You might get a weather loach, but as they get bigger they might eat your other fish. They're not particularly aggressive, but a fish will eat just about anything that fits in its mouth, so there ya go.

Stay away from goldfish. I could go into the myriad reasons why they are not good tank fish, but I wont waste either of our time. Just take my word for it, please.
