water evaporating is from dry room air. Use a hood and fluorescent (not incandescent) light to keep the evaporation to a minimum and keep adding water to the tank when it gets low.
DON'T feed to much i feed mine every 2 day,most tanks get dirty from over feeding.
and the best filter you can get will be best for your fish
the one i have and like is a whisper pump,it cost $100.00 (new)
but i have 75 gallon tank
and the evaporating water,all you can do is just keep adding water spring water is best if you don't want use the water conditioner

I can help you with your evaporation problem. I keep a jug of treated water near the fish tank for evaporation replacement. The water is declorinated and temperatured (as close as possibly without a 2nd heater). I add the water if I find the filter sound a bit too loud with "water fall noise".
