Whats the best way to get algae off the larger decorative rocks in an aquarium2007-11-24 23:43:29

Elbow grease is an obvious way.I'm looking for something unique..cause this is some stubborn algae..VERY OLD ROCK.Holy Rock

Answers:

First, cut down on the time that you leave the lights on in your tank. That is usually the problem with too much algae.

If it is the long strand algae, you can get some rosy barbs, they just love the stuff and the male long finned rosy barbs are just beautiful.

If it is regular algae, you could set up a second tank big enough to hold the largest pieces of the rock and buy some Amano shrimp, they are small but mighty algae eaters. I have a half dozen in a tank with some non-agressive fish and when a decoration or rock gets to be unsightly, I just remove it from its' tank and pop it in with them. In about 3-4 days, they have it spotless.

Bleach in a bucket of water is the next option. One or two cups in a 4-5 gallon bucket will clean it off in a day or two. Of course then you have to rinse very, very, very well and add De-Chlor to the rinse water each time you soak it for a day.

Just soak in the special mixture sold in stores for algea removal, I cant remember the name off hand, OR, you can take some bleach water and soak it in that and then rinse VERY well before repacing in the aquarium. It is what I do. And, for the record, start cleaning it, the rock, EVERY time you clean the tank, moron.lol.. that was a joke.. I hope you smiled. NOT meant to hurt, I was teasing you.

Get an algae eating fish, like a pleco, a bristlesone plecc is a hard worker. Or try algae eating shrimps, otto's or mollies. Failing that, take them out and give em a good scrub.

If you soak the rock in a bucket of 2 gallons of water mixed with two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide for two days, you will kill those hard to get rid of algae spores which will mean it will be a long time before it re-grows. Then rinse the rock (extremely well) and boil it in a lobster pot before putting it back in your tank. You can also consider buying large snails (they won't add much to the bio-load of your tank), and replacing your light bulbs. Old bulbs produce too much red spectrum light which really helps algae to grow.
