Whats wrong with my goldfish2007-11-24 23:42:46

I have a 5" goldfish (Nate), and today I noticed he's swimming a little funny. Normally he's pretty calm, but he's been more active today.

Then I noticed that his right turns were awkward. I looked closer and his head is slightly turned to the left, all the time. And his left gills don't appear to open as much as the right either.

Answers:

have you been over feeding him, as feeding too much can cause tempery swimming problems.

he may of scratched his side on an orniment or something.

the water quality may be off. do a parshal water change (about 50% to 25%) and replace with tap safe treated water, as fish are sentive to chemicals in the water.

other than that i dont know. after claening the tank keep an eye on him and hopefully he will improve.

Recent water change? Did you do a good heavy duty clean job on your tank just prior to these symptoms? If so the most common cause is nitrogen gas poisening. You basically didn't let the nitrogen gas dissapate before dumping it into your tank.

If that is the case some fish will correct themselves in a few days of it can be permanent. It all depends on the severity of the amount of exposure.

well i wouldn't get too scared now, but if he starts to swim side ways or always stays below then u should get in action, don't give it big chunks of fish food, change its water regularly, check its tummy it might be pregnant, if there's any colorful stones or pebbles take them out immediately they absolutely poison fishes, and also don't give it too much food because fishes don't know when to stop, also check if its got damage done underneath it or next to its mouth or gills, but as i said don't worry now its not that unusual also make sure the water doesn't have too much chlorine and if it does put the special fish water drops which clears some chlorine away..

There is an organ in most fish that is like a balloon. It controls when the fish goes up or down in the water.

Your goldfish most likley has a disease that is affecting the "balloon organ."

You can try putting medicine in the water.

He might be getting a swim bladder infection. Add a bit of salt to your water and feed your fish cooked rice and peas. Don't laugh. It works.
