It is also more accurate then using cycle fish because you can prepare enough bacteria for the entire bioload from the beginning instead of slowing adding fish and risking mini-cycles. As Greg mentioned, clear ammonia free from any dyes or detergents, is safe for a fish tank. If you aren't completely sure, give the bottle a shake. If suds collect and stay at the surface it isn't suitable for the fishless cycling method.

I, personally, use ammonium chloride for fishless cycling with my aquariums. It comes in a powder, and takes very little (less than an eighth of a teaspoon) to spike the tank to 2ppm to start the cycling process. I found it on ebay for around $4, including shipping.
