I believe Walmart carries the liquid, as do certain grocery stores. Just make sure it is pure ammonia and has no added fragrance or chemicals.

Also, make sure you have your ammonia tester kits available to test your ammonia levels throughout the cycle. If you have a PetSmart near you, you can get the Aquarium Pharmaceutical's Freshwater Master Kit for around $15 (this includes tests for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and high range pH, as well as four test tubes). You'll have to go to their website and print out their online ad to take to the store with you (otherwise, you'll spend close to $40 for it) - they will price-match any of their own online merchandise in the store.

And one more thing - do not add the ammonia if you have fish in the tank or if you plan on adding fish to the tank anytime within the next three to six weeks.

In Southern CA you can just go to about any Vons or Albertsons and find no-name brand clear/pure ammonia for sell. The no-name brands are usually best.

Just shake the bottle up, and if it foams - put it back on the shelf and keep looking. The only kind of bubbles that should show at the top of the bottle you are looking at are air bubbles after you shake it. Look at the ingredients if listed, but do the shake test to make absolutely sure that there are no surficants/fragrances/detergen. in there or your fishless cycle will be useless and deadly.
