In a big aquarium. I have 3 goldfish in a 45g tank. 20g for the first fish and then 10g per additional fish. Best set up for them. I also have a strong filter to help combat the ammonia.
They are coldwater, so you don't need a heater. You do need lots of air for these guys so an airstone is nice.

Well since it has been really cold around here lately, I like to keep my Gold Fish in the fire place. They keep nice and warm there.
Seriously, from my experience, keep the bowl out of the direct sun light and in a room that's not too dark. Also, make sure it's out of any drafty areas.
In a fish tank.Out of the direct sun the water and the tank will turn green. Some of the Fancie gold fish need a heater and air pump. Ask at the store.
Gold fish are cold water fish so you dont need any expansive equipment to keep them, just a tank with gravel, plants and food. They love to be in groups so get a few of them and keep them on a sturdy surface as the tank gets very heavy when its full of water. As they are bread for living outdoors in ponds dont keep them near a hot radiator or fire.
