Where to put an oscar fish when cleaning his tank2007-11-24 23:42:59

Hi someone give me an oscar fish and i have never had fish before so I don't know anything about them. How do I clean the tank and what do a do with the fish while doing so? It needs cleaned sooo bad. I need to take the rocks out and whatever. There is sooo much food all in his rocks (I know I'm feeding him too much). And I'm scared for the fish be/c the other day he jumped out the of tank (the lid is broke) and we don't know how lone he was out of water. I actually thought he was dead but put in the tank any way and later looked and you could tell he was breathing. I also wanted to know how much should he be feed a day? Thanks soooo much!

I used to have an oscar, and I let him swim in my toilet (lid down) when I cleaned the tank.

Anyways, my Oscar has also jumped out before, they are clever fish and get bored. I would not remove him for the cleaning - it will only stress him out more and they are sensetive fish.

There are gravel cleaners, the kind with a large tube you siphon water and muck into a bucket - they tend to work well, but by far the best is one called the Python No Spill Clean and Fill - it uses faucet pressure to siphon water and is very effective.

I only feed my oscar a few pellets a day - they do not have a growth hormone to tell them when to stop growing and will get larger quickly - my 10" Oscar is almost outgrowing his 55 gallon tank, so I have to ease up on his food intake.
