White very small dots in the water2007-11-24 23:43:05

My tank has been set up for 4 months.. the nitrite, nitrate and ammonia are very low and all other contitions are ideal.. for some reason I have many white dots in the water, covering all the water.

Its 29gal, I have a few plants and about 15 fish 2" or less..

What could that be?

Answers:

Change the mechanical filtering media (the floss or sponge) it may just be debris that comes out of your tap water.

there is an additive that you can put in the water that will coagulate the debris and cause it to sink to the bottom.

Or, it could be air if there is alot of splashing on the surface.

That's a symptom of a fungus known as ich, which is contageous and quickly fatal to fish that contract it. You need to treat the water with a special solution that you can get at the pet store.

If the tiny white dots are on the fish, it could be a bacteria called "ick" which needs to be treated quickly as it will kill your fish. It could also be air bubbles. Take a sample of your tank's water to a local fish store (I go to PetSmart) and have them test your water. Best of luck!

If it is just in the water and not on the fish it could be tiny air bubbles. Do you have a filter that makes a waterfall into the tank? If so then it's just the oxygen. My tanks get it too when the water is too low.

Did you do something to make the cycle crash and maybe its a bacteria bloom?

I would think it could be something as simple as air or eggs. It could be bacteria or tiny organizms that live in aquatic environments.

If you do take your water to be tested at a pet store, I suggest taking it to a smaller pet store. Not a chain like PetSmart. The quality in fish is far below what is acceptable to acclimate into a fragile aquatic environment.
