Why Do my cichlids Open their mouths as if they are yawning2007-11-24 23:43:50
I have 3 cichlids and they all do this thing with their mouth and gills they open their mouth real big and their gills open up far. As if they are yawning. I wonder if this is normal behavior.
Answers:It can be a threat display if they are all of the same sex. Such display makes them appear larger and meaner to each other, and tehy figure out which fish is dominant from the effects shown by one another. It is indeed a normal behavior, and can lead to gripping each other and struggling.
Consider adding some rock ledges and holes, so they have places they can "own" and be more comfortable in. Stack rocks one on another with spaces between them for hiding places or add a few tiny flower pots they can hide in.
Threat display or jaw adjustment prior to or after eating. Bass do it too.
