Why are my fish dying, please help2007-11-24 23:43:47

I've a 50 litre tank with adequate filtration and originally four small fancies in (now only 2 remain a black moor and choc oranda). I've been keeping fish for quite a while now and so was surprised when my other fish died. They showed no outward signs only listing on one side yet with normal bouyancy, therefore ruling out swimbladder. I have put a tonic in the water and this seems to help although particulary the black moor quickly deteriorates again. The choc oranda seems fine except will lie in the bottom corner occasionally. I've had a few suggestions given one being to slightly increase the water temperature, or keep it constant to avoid stress. The water has been tested and all levels of ammonia etc are fine. Has anyone any ideas i'm a bit lost on this problem? Thanks

Sounds exactly like swim bladder disease to me. You need more frequent water changes with salt for freshwater aquariums and you should try feeding you fish the inside of a pea to be on the safe side. Try feeding them peas once a month from now on as it won't harm them but has a lot of benefits for them.

Did you change the water yet? If not , replace 1/2 the water with fresh, there could be some kind of bacteria that the tests aren't picking up. also throw about a teaspoon of table salt in. Its a last resort, but your fish are dieing anyway, and it just may help
It's aquarium salt, not table salt. IMO I wouldn't raise the temp, like you said may stress them, and they thrive better in the cooler temps. Try posting on one of these sites, more familiar with goldfish then I am..

I don't know what size tank a 50 litre is - I only know gallons

sorry, but I'll try to help

I'm wondering how deep your tank is? The fancy goldfish don't do well in water over 12 inches deep (with round bodies and double tails) and they really do poorly if the water current is too swift from the filter, it just wears them out and they die

do not warm their water up

you can email me if you have any more questions

good luck, hope this helps
