Why cant saltwater fish live in fresh water2007-11-24 23:43:07Answers:

I believe it has something to do with the fact that salt water provides a certain pH balance that they need. Also some fishes can switch back and forth from (salt to fresh or fresh to salt) like the Salmon. Why. probably base on how their bodies evolve so that they can adapt and tolerate such changes. As for other saltwater fishes, if placed in freshwater, the pH balance and oxygen intake will become totally unbalance and end up killing the poor fishes.

People have tried and salt water fish cant live in fresh water because their guils need to bring in salt!
Why can't people breathe carbon dioxide?
because the saltwater fish is different to fresh water fish.
Because other wise they'd be called fresh water fish.
They need salt in their water to survive , since they once lived in the ocean they are used to it.
Seriously? Because they are SALTwater fish and need SALTwater.
They need salt in their bodies to carry out their body processes.
For the same reason you can't drink salt water.

Salt water fish actually don't drink water. They get it by osmosis through their skin. Fresh water fish on the other hand drink almost constantly. There are a few species capable of living in both, but I'm not too familiar with how they do it. But I DO know they can't switch easily. It's the reason salmon look so bad when they finish their spawn run.

The answer lies in osmotic pressure. the cells in the fish will try to have the same ration of salt to water as the water outside of their cells. a salt water fish will absorb water into the cells in an attempt to equal the ration outside of the cells. a freshwater fish in salt water will move water out of its cells in an attempt to equal the water/salt ratio.
why can t we touch our nose with our tounge??same question;)
Freshwater and saltwater have different oxygen levels and fish have adapted appropriately to gain the most amount of oxygen from their environment. A saltwater fish can't get enough oxygen from fresh water and vice versa. Except for bull sharks which seem to be an exception, but not a good pet choice.
Beacause of the way they process the saltwater in their environment they have adapted over millions of years to live in the ocean. The freshwater fish process freshwater the same way. There are also some species of fish that live in brackish water. Fresh and saltwater combined in an ecosystem where a river meets the sea or in certain marsh enviornments. These fish can tolerate high levels of salt and very little salt because they have adapted to those parameters over millions of years. Some creatures can live in high methane gas environments that would be lethal to us. So, I guess it all depends how a creature develops in special ways to adapt to its environment.
