Why do fish tanks still have ammonia after 2 months

Why do fish tanks still have ammonia after 2 months2007-11-24 23:43:10

I set up a 29 gallon with community tropicals and a 20 gallon with goldfish. Then tanks have been up and running since July. Filtration is good but tanks are always cloudy with high ammoina and low ph. Pet stores have been no help, they just keep telling me to do partial water changes and wait. Oh and I cut there feeding down to 1X a day about a month ago. Any advise would be appreciated..

Thanks!

Goldfish are notorious for being very messy eaters, and producing a larger than normal amount of waste, which leads to rapid ammonia production. Partial water changes, at least once every two weeks, will help the ammonia problem. Also, I have found that live plants in your aquarium are great at keeping your levels in a good range. The more the better.

You may also want to check the pH levels of your tap water, as that may be part of the problem. Believe it or not, baking soda is a great home remedy for low pH, and is perfectly safe for fish. Just add a teaspoon at a time until the pH is in the normal range.

Keep in mind that it usually takes a good 6 weeks for a tank to become perfectly balanced. Yours just may be taking a little bit longer. Be patient with it, and I'm sure the problem will clear up soon.

Stop peeing in your fishtank?
Fish pee ammonia
Ammonia comes from fish waste or overfeeding. Are the tanks overcrowded? I'd have to agree with the pet stores, water changes. Try changing your charcoal in the filters more often too. The charcoal may be saturating.
Fish produce ammonia with their waste! Maybe feeding them less or at least throwing the food that they don't eat in 20 minutes . You may have too many fish in the tank. The basic rule is 1 cm. of fish per liter. You can change the ph with drops. Its especially important to have clean water. Clean the gravel with a gravel vacuume and partial water changes will help. The bio wheel filters worked fantastically for me
changing charcaol and carbon in your filter will help, feed them less food each time. fish produce amonia in their waste. so good luck
It could be seveal differnt things, mabye you didnt rinse the gravel enough,it could be your water, you might be over feeding them, or a combination of all.A great product that we used a lot whoen we got our first tank is ACCU-CLEAR Ifound it at fish store, it cleared ours up the address on the bottle is AQUARIUM PHARMACEUTICALS,INC. P.O BOX 218 CHALFONT,PA. 18914. I have also heard nad do belive now because we had all differnt size tanks the bigger ones are easier to take care of because it is a more natual setting.good luck & I hope something I have said will help you in some way.
Fishy cycles can tank at least 2 months, but in a tank your size it shouldn't take that long (even with a fishy cycle).

Personally if it were me I would get the fish out of your tank, and begin a Fishless Cycle. Here's an article on it for you (if you have another already cycled tank - put your fish in it while you cycle, otherwise see if you pet store will take them back).

Fishless Cycling

Good luck!

do a one third water change and stop feeding fish (can go very long time without food)wait a day check ammonia level do another one third water change and wait another day you should start seeing ammonia level go down repeat this till neutral like some have told you overcrowding and overfeeding is a major cause of hi ammonia levels
