Why do mommy fishes eat her own babies2007-11-24 23:43:13

i have just had a platy that had babies. i wasnt sure if it was done or not so i left it in the breeder tank. She keeps eating her babies and im not sure if she is done or not. Can comeone please tell me how do u kno when they are done and y the mommys eat their own babies? Thanks!

the mother platy will eat her young because they just think the babies are live food they do not rear their young like some other fish you should have lots of plants in the tank so the babies can hide till you take the mother out It usually takes about 2hours to have all the babies up to 40 you can see them come out and dive for the plants to hide

There are many reasond y these fishes do that.

The reasons cud be..

1. hunger

2. To keep up the head of the clan

3. Breeding head

4. to avoid predators to identify the place where they cherish bu killing some of their own smalls.etc

There could also be some other reasons.

Mommy fishes eat their babies because they're stupid. Watch her as she's giving birth, and pay attention to the timing between each baby. When that time period starts getting longer & longer to the point that no babies are coming out and she's eating them, then she's done.

Most fish will eat anything they can fit in their mouths. You need to removr her. In general breeding net are only so so. The breeder boxes work better.

Because they do not have good maternal instincts. Try getting a Breeder kit at PetSmart. It Helps keep the baby's separated from the mother.

I don't think it is an intelligence issue. It is a matter iof instinct. Platies bear live young and provide no parental care. That is just the way it is. They have no instinct or genetic programming for them to provide care for their young so they simply see the babies as fair game to eat.

You are going to just have to watch her carefully next time.
