Why do my aquarium filters motors stop working2007-11-24 23:43:13

For the second time in just a few months, my aquarium filter's motor has burnt itself out. :(

When I lived in FL, went through a lot of filters due to the continual power surges. I've had the best luck with Penguins. What kind of substrate are you using? I have some tanks with sand, and that seems to jam them up a little more so. Like the previous post said, clean them a bit more often, or if it's one of the cheaper ones try buying a better brand.

sounds like one of 2 things. your filter is too small for the tank and gets clogged with sediment, or you have a short in your house electrical system. I suspect the former. clean out the filter every week, and buy a bigger or second filter. also check for the hardness of your water if you are using tap water.

if you don't change your water and let it evaporate to a certain point your filter will stop.

Is your tank very dirty? Do you have a screen over the suction tube? If large objects, or even a lot of little ones, are sucked in too rapidly, they can get caught in the magnetic fanblades at the bottom of the tube, causing it to stop and burning the motor out trying to force it to move again. They make screens/filters you can put over the end of those tubes to prevent large debris from ruining your filter. That could be it.

This is for judith r. if there was short in the house electrical system one of 3 things would happen.

1. Trip a breaker

2. Blow a fuse.

3. If no circuit protection, burn the house down.

Is it below the water level,and have you taken it apart for a good clean?You could take it back to the shop and they'll check it out for you

Clean it every 30 days, and if it's under warranty - take it back where you purchased it from and see if they will exchange it.
