Why do the minnows in our pond keep on dying
We added about 250 minnows on Fri. We tempered them correctly but we have found 3 dead on day one, 15 day two, 24 day three, 31 day four. we have put aquashade in there (20 days ago) but it says it is safe for fish. It is spring fed and we also placed 6 koi in there.
Answers:dont overdo it, you have to let nature take its coarse. Remember in nature there isnt someone at the pons always messing with it. I think you should let some algea grow naturally and let some pond plants stay in there lke 2 weeks to get settled then out more minnows in. That way things will be almost like they are naturally when they enter the pond.
That isn't too many to die. They have to adjust to the new water.
How long has your pond been up and running? If it hasn't been long then you could be suffering from an ammonia spike. Or if your temperature is too high they might now like it or if your pond is too little. 250 fish is a lot to put in at once even if it is only minnows they aren't very hardy. Good luck!
If it's spring fed it could be low o2 content -to cold - food
they probably haven't aclimatised to the new environment yet. Some could have been weak or sick. The ecosystem has not had time to develop yet if it is a new pond. Wait awhile before adding more until the system builds up.
u put in too many at one time, they didn't get enough oxygen underwater and with so many it became polluted with their excretions
minnows are notorious for carrying diseases and also you put too many in the pond
treat your pond with a good dose of aquarium salt (see directions on package) since we dont know what they have
