Why does the salt out of my water end up on the lid2007-11-24 23:43:16

I have a 56 gallon salt water aquarium. The salt keeps crystalling up on the lid and around my lights. Does this affect my water..how bad? Can I scrape it off, and put it back in my tank?

Its actually from evaporation. The water goes into the air, but the salt seperate and forms out into a solid on the tank. As the water evaporates, just like you would with any fish tank just add more.

from evaporation the salt goes into the air and ends up on your lid or sides of your tank just wipe it off it's nothing to worry about unless it's wood then it can rot it :o( this may lower your salinity but not by much just check it weekly :o)

It's usually alright to knock it back off into the tank, although if the lid is plastic, you want to make sure the plastic doesn't have any harmful chemicals in/on it. I personally wouldn't put the salt back in the tank, just because of the possibility of chemicals. Just keep checking the salinity regularly.

It is referred to as salt creep. caused by a fine spray of aquarium water. You can remove it regularly, or you can try a salt creep eliminator product which you wipe over areas that suffer from it.
