Why does the water stink in my fish tank2007-11-24 23:43:17

I just got the tank a couple days ago, is there something I need to buy to stop the water from smelling. I have goldfish in the tank? Thanks for your assistance.

The water might need to be changed, you could be over feeding the fish and the food may be the cause. I've been told that goldfish produces amonia, dont know how trur it is though. I suggest surfing the net and study upon taking care of a fish tank depending on the fish you have. Good luck with it.

All tanks should have a earthy smell to it but if it smells worse then that then check your tank params. High ammonia can cause it to smell more then usual, it can also kill your fish. Do water changes to lower it and if you don't know about a cycle then read some info about that too.

They can smell for many different reasons but to get rid of it get some carbon inserts for your filter..that will get rid of the smell.

It smells because of rotting fish food and fish fecal matter. All you can do is change the water regularly, have a quality carbon filter, and only feed your fish as much as they can eat within two minutes. Good Luck

Could be several causes but here are some suggestions/questions.

Do you have a good filter on the acquarium? The ones that work off and air "bubbler" don't really provide the needed circulation and filtration. So if that is what you have, I'd recommend you get a filter that circulates the water efficiently, and uses granular carbon. Depending on the size of your acquarium the filtration needs will change. Read the packages and select a filter that will filter your entire tank capacity a few times an hour.
