I live in Thailand, where Fighting Fish live naturally in the wild, as well as being pets. In a pond, in the wild, a male fighting fish has a harem, or group of females. He is biologically programmed to fight any other male he sees and keep him away from his females. The males are easily recognizable, as they are the ones with the pretty tails. The females are more plain looking, and not usualy sold as pets.

This fish is territorial and it doesn't like another male fish in it's territory.

You can put a female with it and it won't fight.
