Why is my filter so noisy2007-11-24 23:43:59

I have a 20 gal filter that has worked great for about a year, and just recently it started making a noise. Its like a grinding almost (the sound it makes when you change the filter and it fills back up). What can I do or should I just get a new one?

If its a typical power filter, it might just be done. The motors on those things don't alway last all that long. Clean it out and run some water through it and try it again. If it still makes that noise, its time to get a new one.

Take it apart, clean it up (motor parts that may be removeable too, like a magnet with a propeller on it?) and try starting it again. Failing that, they're so inexpensive I'd just pick up a new one.

The magnet impellers (the part that spins) and it's housing should be cleaned monthly. You've got about a year's worth of slime growing on it. Alternatively a small particle may have ended up near the impeller, check any debris when you clean the impeller. That should solve your problem.

Take apart the filter's parts and give it a good rinse with aquarium water (during water changes it's the best way as you can rinse the parts with the water in the bucket)

Most of the time the culprit is in the impeller housing getting clogged up with slime and sometimes even algea which seriously slows down water movement and sometimes even nearly burn up the motor itself forcing it to shut down.

I have an aqua clear 30 'n every second or so water change i take it apart to give the entire housing 'n basket a good wash but if i had the patience to listen to the damn splashing from an emperor penguin filter i'd prolly stick to that :)

It may not be in the water right and/or it could be a high powered filter.

If after cleaning, the filter is still making a noise its because there is a problem with the impeller.
