only joking. it takes time for adjustment. don't stand close to the tank after you feed. just come up drop in the food and stand back. hope he has some buddies - they do better.
keep down any loud noises and don't tap on the glass. Sudden movements can cause icks and kill the fish. talk softly to fishie when you are near the tank.
yes, goldfish will become friendly and very easy to take care of.

Are you really serious? Do you expect your fish to act like a dog? It's a FISH! Fish are suppose to be afraid of moving object because in nature they are at the top of the food chain.
Just who told you that gold fish are suppose to be social? Did an expert told you this or was it a friend/co worker?
My only guess is that your goldfish is not used to be around people. Maybe the pet store it was originally at didn't have a lot of visiters looking. My best suggestion is to feed and be around your goldfish more often.
