Why is my new fish tank fogged up and dark What do I do HELP2007-11-24 23:44:02

I set up a tank about 2 days okay to the water cycling. I don't have any fish yet. I bought the 10 gallon tank used from someone. I cleaned it without any bleach or soap. Just water but it was spotless when I set it up. I also have a castle (ornament) with it that also came used, i also cleaned that. I have 2 10 gallons and I set both up exactly the same. The only difference is for the tank that is cloudy has a filter. The other one that has clear water has no filter yet. I put aquarium salt, bacteria supplement, and water conditioner in both tank and used the reccomended amounts.

Yesterday the tank was clear, when Iwoke up today it was all foggy, What should I do? thanks

Answers:

Leave it, it means that the tank is cycling. You are seeing an bacteria bloom. When it clears up in another day or two, change 14% of the water, wait a day and if ther isn't another bloom, you can add a couple of fish, or move the filter to the other tank to increase the speed of the cycling in that tank. (it takes a lot longer when there is nothing in the tank to cycle).

Here is a really good site on fishless cycling

I assume the filter is previously used. It probably contained some detritus that is providing food for a bacterial bloom. Keep the filter running. Read up on fishless cycling with food or ammonia and get your tank cycled before adding pet fish. Get ammonia, NitrIte, and NitrAte test kits to moniter cycle. Good Luck!
Was the filter used? If the filter was used, there could be dirt or bacteria left in it. It would probably be best to change out all the water and start fresh. Bleach is actually ok for the glass in the tank and for any plastic plants that you have--just don't use it on rocks or anything else that is pourous. To get rid of the bleach, you can either let everything sit for at least 24 hours (it takes 24 hours for the chlorine--the active base--the evaporate), or you can douse it with dechlorinator to neutralize it immediately.
