Will my Convicts kill the other fish in my tank once they start breeding2007-11-24 23:44:26

I have a male and female convict (only about a week) and they appear to be ready to start breeding. They are smaller than the other fish in the tank, but I heard they would kill everyone. Is this true?

They might give it a good try! Are the other fish in the tank Cons or at least Cichlids? Even when not spawning Convicts are bullies, so either way you're going to play referee. If your happy couple get too insane, give them their own tank. Most Cichlids (Convicts are South American Cichlids) are aggressive and territorial by nature, so remember to give them plenty of room and many hiding places, caves, stacked rocks for everyone to claim and more to retreat or dodge in! Mine were the size of nickles and spawned in a little flower pot a week after I brought them home!

not neccisarilly but once the fry r born you will want to put a divider n your tank 2 keep the other fish from eatting them as well as keeping the other fish safe from the convicts. dont forget to put a large rock n your tank for the fry 2 cling to

We have a pair of breeding convincts and a bunch of fry right now. They aren't killing the other fish, but they sure are making them miserable. They've driven everyone else (All bigger fish) into one corner and they've taken over more than half of the tank. The rest of the fish are stressed but they're surviving so far. Once the fry are big enough we're going to move the whole lot of them into another tank. You might want to consider moving your convicts because once they start breeding they don't stop. Our male is displaying his colors again already and the fry aren't even two weeks old yet!

I have a pair of convicts in my 55 gallon tank. I didn't know anything about them breeding until we saw a whole mess of babies born last week!
