Will sunburst platy and black tetras get along with my emerald corycats2007-11-24 23:44:29

I have two emerald cory cats in my 29 gallon tank. There is a sale on sunburst platy and blackskirt tetras at the pet store. Will they get along, eat similar food, and not throw off my ammonia, nitrites, etc..?

No problem. They can all live together happily. The only issue I see is that technically cories like a lower pH and platies like a higher pH, but they should all be fine at the pH your aquarium is at. Add fish slowly. In a 29 gallon, 6 of those fish would be the absolute maximum I would add at a time, and if you don't want to risk throwing off your balance and getting an ammonia spike, I'd add up to 4 of one kind of fish, wait a week, and then add up to 4 of the other kind.

Also, emerald catfish and cories do like to be in groups of 3 or more, but what most people don't tell you is these are species groups. You can't mix and match, like buying a peppered cory for your emeralds, because they won't school with him. And the emeralds aren't technically cories, they are brochis splendens, which are commonly confused with the bronze cory (or green cory), so you have to be careful not to buy a bronze cory in an attempt to make your emeralds a group of three.

Shouldn't be a problem. I'd add another cory cat to the mix, they prefer to be in groups of at least 3. Usually the only problem with cory cats, is if a fish lays eggs on the bottom, a lot of times they'll eat them.

As far as the water parameter levels, depends how many fish you currently have and how many you're planning on adding, and how long your tank's been set up/if it's cycled.
