i keep killing my fishes2007-11-24 23:33:57

every time i buy a fish a week later it dies

Answers:

There are many possible explanations. The biggest thing that people don't understand about aquariums is that fish need to be introduced into them slowly. Fish excrete waste, and bacteria need to build up in the tank that will convert that waste into nitrogen. Fish need to be in the tank for those bacteria to begin to multiply, but It takes time for those bacteria to build up. So you need to introduce fish slowly at first, one or two at a time over a period of a few weeks.

If you have done that, other possibilities are:

1) There is another fish that is killing your new fish. Watch the tank and see if someone is being a bully.

2) Check that the temperature is 72-78 degrees.

3) Make sure the pump/filter is working properly so the fish have enough oxygen.

4) Never put tap water into a tank directly. Always let is sit for 24 hours so the chlorine can evaporate.

5) Disease is a possibility but unlikely. Look for bumps or white spots on the fishes skin.

6) Feed the fish only a small amount (what they can eat in a few minutes) several times a day.

7) Make sure you are not putting salt water fish in a freshwater tank or vice versa.

8) Don't over crowd the tank. No more than 1 inch of fish per two gallons of water.

That should cover it.

are you removing the chlorine from the water?
every time you add a new fish, you are supposed to add conditioner to the tank.also test the water for high or low ph!
are you feeding it..
First, make sure your water is conditioned by making sure the chlorine is removed. Also, if you have an aquarium you need to buy a treatment called Cycle. It helps age the tank with good bacteria to help increase the life of your fish. I used to have the same problem as you, but after using the Cycle I haven't had a fish die in at least 3 months. Also, it helps to keep the water clear. Another thing, make sure that you are not overfeeding. If your fish doesn't consume all the the food within a minute then you are feeding too much.
try not buying any fish 4 2 weeks. let the tank become established w/ bacteria. and never completely change the water, or or rinse the substrate/gravel, thats where the majority of waste consuming bacteria are. if necsesary do a partial water change about 1/2 every other week
does it have white spots maybe you got ick or something either way u should totally change ur water and put some ick away this will surely help.
Did you immediatly but the fish into the tank along with your other fish?
