it is silver with brown and white dots on its fins and it has a pointy nose
i think it is tropical but it is doing fine in a normal tank with goldfish

An angelfish perhaps?
If it swims in deep waters it may be some type of catfish, because in some stores I've seen ones like yours. The pet store guy told me that they are rare.
A Butterfly fish perhaps. Some of them do have pointy noses. Check out http://www.marinecenter.com/. They have pics of tropical fish, maybe that will help.
Sounds like a Corydoras or some type of catfish or possibly even a Loach. Google Loach and Corydoras.
