no i couldn't stop it even though i'm aware of the effects of crowding n how do u tell the difference 4m a girl angelfish n a boy angelfish?

Answers:

Step up the water changes, use a good dechlor, ammonia binder such as prime. However, you do need to clean the gravel also.

You can increase the filtration, add a second one and use a good bio filter such as Aquaclear or Penguin.

Add plants, low level light such as Java fern, Bolbitus, Wendtii's, Wisteria.

Try shopping for a used tank also, second hand stores, yard sales or places like freecycle. You can often find a nice second hand tank, either a bigger size or a second one the same size and divide the four to two tanks for a time.

As for being male or female, its really a case of watching, The best time is spawning but they don't like to be disturbed then really, they will clean off the surface, run off any others, but the female will travel up laying eggs with the male following closely behind fertilizing the eggs. I did have Angels way back when.. :)

If you get a water filter then that will help alot. You still have to clean the water filter though, but it's easier then cleaning a whole tank. Good luck.

Weekly, at the very least, water changes of 40%. Do yourself a favor and pick up a nitrate test kit at your local pet store. Test your nitrates a week after you do your normal water change; if they're higher than 40ppm, you should either be doing larger (never more than 40%) or more frequent water changes. Try doing your water changes every five days - if your nitrates are still high, move it up to every three days. Word to the wise - consider planting live plants; they help rid the tank of *some* nitrates, but not enough to allow you to stop doing weekly water changes. Ideally, you want your nitrates to be less than 20ppm at all times.
