I think fish are one of the most fun pets, along with being generally the easiest ones to care for. Sure, you'll have weekly cleanings but they don't bark, they don't poop in your shoes, definitely no white hair all over your black clothing and so on.

For a fun, active'ish fish, I prefer Pearlscale Goldfish. They look like they've swallowed a golfball and look as if their waddling across the tank when they swim. They're so friggin cute, I chuckle when I watch them. Its one of my favorites to encounter when I'm at work.

The downside is how dirty Goldfish are. They are among the most dirtiest fishes in fish hobbying and thus require a good deal of tank maintenance. At least once a week water changes (no more then 45% at a time.) are needed to keep them at optimal health. They also NEED a filter AND airator.

In a 20 gallon tank (usually, I recommend 20 long's, a tank with a longer area of space as opposed to a height because Goldfish are lenght wise swimmers.) you can comfortly keep 2-3 Pearlscales. (A gallon for each inch of an adult fish. Generally GF's reach 3-5" at adult size.) I'd probably only keep 2, though. Its sufficient room for both and you have extra tank space because of how dirty they are.
